Tipping is a sensitive subject and we all like to be 'doing the right thing'.

It is customary to tip porters approximately RM2 or RM3 per bag. A 10 to 15% gratuity is appreciated in restaurants, particularly where the service charge is waived.

Visitors to Malaysia must submit a Digital Arrival Card before entry. This electronic card, which replaces the traditional paper version, can be filled out up to three days prior to arrival. Completing this step in advance facilitates a smoother entry process at immigration.

The best rates for money exchange are found in banks or bureau de change offices. These are located in shopping malls or along busy streets.

Banks generally close at mid-afternoon however exchange offices open until late. For Travellers Cheques, you may need to carry your passport.

The hotel may ask for your credit card upon check in. This is taken as a security deposit to guarantee any incidental extras you may charge to your room. Nothing will be charged to your card unless you choose to do so upon check out.

Tap water is drinkable, however due to the different mineral content, we recommend using it for brushing your teeth only.

Hotels and restaurants serve bottled drinking water and ice is okay for consumption.

The sun is very intense in this part of the world. Protect yourself against sunburn with sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids.

Should you require medical attention, please contact the reception or your Asian Trails Team. Chemists are available all over Malaysia for any medical items you may require. Remember to retain all receipts for any eventual insurance claims.

The crime rate is extremely low in Malaysia, however, as with any other destination in the world, we suggest you keep your wits about you.

TAXI – Taxis are plentiful in Kuala Lumpur, but patience is needed when dealing with drivers. By law, they are required to use the meter; however, securing one may take several attempts. Agreeing on a price beforehand can often result in charges that are 2–3 times the standard metered rate.

For a more predictable fare, consider using Grab, a popular ride-hailing service that offers competitive pricing and the convenience of booking via an app.

TRAIN – Light Rain Transit (LRT), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and KL Monorail have become very popular for getting around in air-conditioned comfort and avoiding the heavy traffic jams during the rush hour.

Markets, malls and bazaars are all available in Kuala Lumpur. Your Asian Trails Team will be happy to highlight the places which may interest you. Bargaining is essential!
